Carbonated Water MakerIf you love drinking seltzer water, staying healthy, and saving the environment, a home carbonated water maker may be just the thing for you. My family recently decided to buy one of these machines and it has really made a difference at our house.

A seltzer carbonation machine is about the size of a coffee maker and doesn’t use any batteries or electricity. All the magic is done by a CO2 canister concealed in the back of the machine.

It only takes a few seconds to enjoy nearly unlimited amounts of sparkling water and soda.

Here are 5 reasons why you should get a seltzer water maker:

Reason #1: You Control the Fizziness

For carbonated water lovers, one of the key benefits of a seltzer water maker is that you get to choose the amount of fizz of your soda water. Some people prefer a gentle fizz. Others prefer an intense fizz. Usually it only takes 2-3 button presses to fully carbonate a liter of water. I always add an extra push to make it just a bit more fizzy.

Reason #2: Healthy Beverages

Not only do you control the fizziness, you also control what gets added to your soda water. This provides a great opportunity to teach your family about healthy alternatives to high-fructose corn syrup name brand sodas. Instead of sugary syrups, why not use a squeeze of lime juice or a splash of cranberry juice. You can also make your own flavors with fruit juice, green tea, or anything else you find in your kitchen.

In addition to flavoring, you also control the water source. You can use plain old water straight from the tap, or you can use water from a filter.

Reason #3: Save the Environment

This is perhaps the most important benefit of owning a home seltzer water maker. Most of these machines include one or more sturdy and reusable soda bottles that are good for many years of soda making. By reusing your bottles instead of throwing them away, you greatly reduce your plastic bottle waste. Reusing is even better than recycling.

Secondly, these machines can help reduce your carbon footprint. There is no point in paying for someone else to produce, bottle, and then truck plastic bottles around the country when you have all the materials at home.

Reason #4: Reduce Your Grocery Bill

The CO2 canisters included with most carbonated water machines are good for about 60 liters of carbonated water. Larger (120 liter) sizes are also available. Name brand sparkling water can cost several dollars per liter at the store. Home seltzer machines can make a liter of carbonated water for about 20-30 cents per liter.

Reason #5: Endless Carbonated Water, Seltzer Water, and Club Soda

Since you have all the materials at your finger tips, these machines can make virtually unlimited amounts of carbonated water on demand. If you run out of soda at a birthday party, or club soda at a cocktail party, it only takes a few seconds to make more. You won’t have to run off to the store to buy more.

The convenience, economic, environmental, and health benefits of owning a seltzer water maker make these machines perfect additions to your home. I’ve talked to several people who have given them as house warming gifts, wedding presents, and to students going off to college.

We love our new Sodastream carbonated water maker. It is quick and easy and lets us make healthy sparkling water beverages whenever we want.

If you haven’t seen a carbonated water maker before, prepare to be impressed. It looks very similar to a small coffee maker. There are several different styles. Mine is made of black plastic and blends in perfectly on my kitchen counter. There is a place to insert a reusable soda bottle included with the unit. Hidden inside the machine is a CO2 canister used for carbonating your water. The only control is a big button on top of the machine. This is used to inject the carbonation into the water.

Making your own soda at home is a very simple process.

Step 1: Fill up the bottle with water. You can any type of water. My preference is to use chilled water from our Brita filter in the fridge.

Step 2: Insert the bottle into the soda machine and lock it in place.

Step 3: Push the big button on top 3-4 times. This is the fun part. You can inject as much as as little fizz into the water as you like. Each time you press the button, you will hear a cool wooshing sound as you watch the carbonation rush in. If you have children, they will love to help out at this step. I should add that the wooshing sound changes to a funny raspberry sound when the soda is fully charged. This sound always cracks up the kids.

Now you can stop here and immediately enjoy crisp, clean carbonated water. But if you prefer, Sodastream also offers a while range of soda syrups (both regular and diet) to mix into your soda water. You can also easily add fruit juices, a twist of lime, or any other flavorings you have around the house.

We love our new carbonated water machine. It is a lot of fun and makes very refreshing drinks. It also helps us save money and reduce our plastic bottle waste. That is refreshing as well.
